Villarreal showing their class at Dallas Cup

So far Villarreal is just as good as advertised. The Spanish side arrived in Dallas with a sparkling season under their belts and have proceeded to look as one of the favorites after two group matches at the prestigious Dallas Cup.

On Sunday Villarreal dispatched one of the top MLS Academy sides taking care of FC Dallas 3-1. A pair of goals from Jorge Galvan and a late penalty provided the margin of victory. FCD fought valiantly but could not withstand early pressure from Villarreal in both halves.

Monday offered the team from Spain a chance to take a stranglehold on Group C as they faced off against Red Bull Brasil. The South American club has never had any success at Dallas Cup prior and the same looks to be the case this year. Villarreal ran over the Brazilians winning 4-1.

The comprehensive victory leaves Villarreal atop the group on six points with the final group match coming Wednesday against Queretaro who played to a 1-1 draw with FC Dallas on Monday. Villarreal will only need a tie Wednesday to clinch a semifinal berth and could already have the group won if Queretaro do not defeat Red Bull Brasil on Tuesday.

The smart money expects Villarreal to be facing off against one of the Mexico powers (Tigres or CF Monterrey) in a Dallas Cup semifinal on Friday in Frisco.
