TCU opens with win over Alabama in womens soccer

What an opening night in Fort Worth as TCU took care of visiting Alabama 1-0 on a late Kayla Hill header.  It was a mouth-watering matchup featuring a pair of teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year.  Up for grabs was a chance for a quality non-conference win that will undoubtedly impress poll voters and improve the NCAA Tournament resume.

The first half saw TCU buzzing around.  The Lady Frogs definitely brought the energy and forced the play.  Alabama was content to try to play out of the back with a short passing game.  It got them into trouble several times as the TCU front line forced them into turnovers deep in their own half.

The best chance of the half fell to the home side after a poorly weighted back pass was stolen by Messiah Bright who rounded the keeper Alex Pavin.  Bright didn’t have her feet under her to slot the ball home and decided to slide the ball back to the open McKenzie Oliver who saw her shot saved by Pavin.  The rebound fell for Payton Crews who had her shot caught cleanly by Pavin.  A nice double save to keep the match scoreless. Alabama had a nice chance late in the half but their shot whizzed just wide of the TCU net.

Early in the second half everything changed when Alex Pavin was sent off for the Crimson Tide leaving them to play short for almost all of the half.  The entire flow of play changed and it was one way traffic the rest of the night.  It was just a matter of if TCU could fine the winner.  Alabama withstood a 12 shot barrage after the red card but held on and looked destined to make it to overtime until a TCU corner kick in the final couple of minutes.

Alabama defended the initial ball well but the clearing header was collect by Tijana Djuricek who curled in a wonderful ball from the left wing.  Kayla Hill was waiting and her glancing header found the net with only two minutes to play.  A really nice win for TCU to open the season.  Five Frogs made their college debuts in the match.  TCU returns to action Sunday afternoon when McNeese State visits Fort Worth.
