Favorites having tough time at Russia 2018 World Cup

Well with the opening group matches in the books for all the groups at the 2018 Russia World Cup the one thing we have learned is that we knew nothing.  It reminds me of one of my favorite lines from Game of Thrones. “You know nothing Jon Snow” And that is how I feel today.  

Frankly said, the big boys have been shocked.  Starting with the defending champions Germany who went down to a very deserving Mexico side.  But almost none of the favorites have been grabbing the expected three points.  France, Uruguay and England all barely scraped by as really only Belgium and Croatia took care of business in any sort of fashion.  

Meanwhile, the South American sides have not been impressing at all.  Brazil, Argentina and Colombia all failed to gain the expected results and will face immense pressure in their next games.  I guess we shouldn’t be surprised as South American teams rarely fare well when they head to Europe for World Cups though.  

Only two of the top eight countries in the FIFA rankings managed to win their opener. Now we will see how these “favorites” react.  When expectations are dashed on the opening day it is tough to right the ship.  Only 12% of teams that have lost their opening World Cup match have been able to advance from group play so the odds are definitely against some of these countries for sure.

So far the surprises have been Senegal and Mexico with impressive wins and of course the best match of the World Cup so far the scintillating Spain v Portugal 3-3 draw.  Hopefully the 2nd match days are as entertaining and unpredictable as we have seen.  The 2nd match days will give us the debut of Mo Salah for Egypt as well as juicy matchups between Argentina & Croatia, Peru v France, and Germany v Sweden.
