Playoff season is upon us and Thursday evening gave Soccer fans an opening round matchup of Trinity and Allen. The Trojans had a wonderful regular season which saw them finish 2nd in a tough district with Marcus, Hebron, Southlake & Flower Mound while Allen comes out the uber competitive District 6-6A. An always come competitive 2-3 matchup. Who would be able to force their style of play on the night?

In the 22nd minute the Trojans would jump in front. After some nice work on the left wing a low cross found Chen Adjei who blasted a first time rip high into the right corner of the net. Quite a strike to give Trinity the lead.

Kevin Navarrete nearly doubled the lead five minutes later as he whistled a drive just over the crossbar. Right after Mateo Gonzalez forced Allen keeper Holden Essman into a nice save as he pushed a shot wide for a corner. It was mostly one way traffic at that point. It was Trinity again shortly after as Mina Youssef slipped a nice ball in for Navarrete who crossed. The ball was deflected and sat right in the six but was cleared just before Mina could pounce for the goal.

With five minutes left in the half Allen created a good opportunity from a set piece as a long free kick fell right in the six. Keeper Garrett Bonar raced out to steer the ball to safety. Another long throw in was the result with Reed Berry smashing a shot straight into the chest of Bonar. The game was opening up just in time for the halftime whistle. Trinity 1 Allen 0

Allen started the second half on the front foot as they showed more energy pushing Trinity into their own half. It was a much more back and forth game then the opening 40 minutes.

The effort would pay off as Allen tied the game up in the 60th minute. Jack Grimes did some nice work to get away from a pair of Trojan defenders before sliding a perfect low ball to find Ethan Tran all alone at the back post. Tran had no problem putting past the helpless Garrett Bonar and the celebration was on.

Everything to play for as time wound down. Trinity tried to strike back with nine to play but Allen keeper Holden Essman was up to the task turning aside the good Kevin Navarrete drive from 25 yards. The last fifteen minutes were wild and crazy as there were flashes of rugby over soccer. Neither side were able to find the winning goal. To overtime we would go!

Allen came within inches in the first overtime and once again it was a long throw in causing the danger. The long toss from Grimes found the head of Ethan Tran whose header glanced just over the bar. With 30 seconds to go Trinity scored a dramatic goal to take the lead as Kevin Navarrete played a perfect ball for Mateo Gonzalez in behind the Allen defense. Mateo got wiped out but was able to slip the ball past the onrushing Essman for the lead.

A major injury to Gonzalez marred the second overtime but Trinity held on for the opening round playoff victory.
