The long wait is over. Egypt is going back to the World Cup. Tears flowed and millions celebrated after the Egypt beat Congo 2-1 to book their place.  Despite winning the African Nations Cup in 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010, Egypt have consistently come unstuck in World Cup qualifying. Until now, that is.  The Egyptians won a group with Ghana, Congo and Uganda.

In the space of a few months Mohamed Salah has become a national hero. His stoppage time penalty clinched the Russia 2018 berth for the delirious nation. Salah has not only been the star for Egypt he has also been making waves in the English Premier League scoring goals for Liverpool.  Another great story is that of goalkeeper Essam El Hadary who will be making his World Cup debut at the age of 44!

Nearly three decades of frustration were released in dramatic fashion.  Twitter, Facebook and Instagram came alive with images and videos of celebrations as Egyptians throughout the world went crazy. Flares, chants, dancing. The people took to the streets in grand celebrations deep into the night in Cairo.

The Pharaohs will be one of the feel good stories in Russia. In their last World Cup appearance at Italy 1990 Egypt failed to get advance from preliminary play.  Can they pull an upset or two and get into the knockouts?  The desire and hearts of a nation will be behind them at every step.
