SMU readies for Conference play

The non-conference part of the schedule has gone pretty well for the SMU men's soccer team.  The young men emerged with a quality record of 6 wins and 1 loss.  The loss was a solid performance though as the Mustangs fell on the road to Stanford who are currently ranked #1 in the nation. The wins have also been of some quality as well with SMU knocking off the likes of Loyola, Cornell, UC Davis, Oakland and Brown on home soil along with a wonderful road win at Santa Clara.

The Mustangs currently sit #19 in the national rankings heading into the opening weekend of AAC play.  SMU jumps right into the fire as they travel to rivals Tulsa on Sunday afternoon for the conference opener.  The two always go toe to toe so expect a battle. A road win in Tulsa would firmly establish SMU as a favorite for the championship this season.

It has been a solid team effort so far as the defense has been stout behind an offense that is averaging over 2 goals per game.  The defense, led by stud keeper Michael Nelson, has only given up 3 goals from the run of play so far and has posted an impressive 3 consecutive shutouts heading into the Tulsa trip this weekend.  Offensively it is Mauro Cichero and Garrett McLaughlin show. The two attackers have found the net 5 times each with Cichero also adding 4 assists.

So far it is looking like one of the better squads over at SMU in recent times.  A good defense and an offense that can score anytime could lead the Mustangs to great things this fall.
