FC Dallas to gain a new rival in Austin FC

Well well well.  It looks like FC Dallas will be gaining a new rival very soon.  The Columbus Crew are going to be relocating to Austin and becoming Austin FC.  I like. I like!  More rivals and more meaningful in-state games are more than welcomed.  I am much more interested to watch FC Dallas against Austin than I am FCD v Columbus.  So bring it on!

This has been an ongoing drama for over a year now as rumours have swirled about the Columbus Crew jumping town.  Loyal fans up in the north have been throwing a fit ever since and who can blame them.  There just isn't much professional sports to go for in Colombus and the Crew had one of the more intimate and nice soccer stadiums in the country.  They regularly were the stage for big USA soccer matches.  Losing that should definitely be a shock.  It will all be Austin's gain though.

Today the move became even more real as Austin FC confirmed their club name and released a logo.  The Austin FC badge features a green silhouette of two intertwining oak trees set against a black background with the name of the city prominently affixed at the top of the U-shaped badge. The Texas Live Oak is a traditional symbol of the city, and the badge boasts 11 intermingled branches, representing the 11 players on a field, and four roots that symbolize the unification of the city.

Of course the move has not been made official by the MLS so PSV, which currently operates Columbus Crew SC, is being very politically correct with their speech right now.

"Given the historical and ongoing market challenges, Precourt Sports Ventures must prepare for every potential scenario for the Club in 2019 and beyond," PSV said in a statement. "Should Austin be granted the requisite approvals ahead of the 2019 season, it will be imperative to launch with momentum and a presence to ensure the long-term sustainability and viability of the Club. Normal business operations shall continue in Columbus for the balance of the 2018 season where winning an MLS Cup remains the objective."

Whatever PSV is saying though doesn't change the actions that the move is coming and FC Dallas will be gaining a new rival only a couple hours to the south!
